St Louis Canoe & Kayak Club › Forums › Common Adventure Trips › Pop-up Alton Slough evening paddle & rescue practice
All, I’m going to head up to Alton Slough tomorrow evening. Will paddle around the Slough and perform some self rescue practice. If anyone else joins we could do a couple of assisted rescues as well. If anyone is interested, I’ll shoot out my phone number and we can align on timing and location. Thanks!
Water is getting chilly. Around 70 degrees but likely warmer in a slough. People who get cold might like a drysuit or wetsuit and dry set of clothes.
Joan, great callout! I’d also recommend a waterproof headlamp for anyone thinking of coming. I can grab some glowsticks if I get a headcount for anyone interested in coming.
What:
a. Sunset paddle around the slough
b. Possible paddle up to Lincoln Shields Eddy (not if I’m alone)
c. After dark self rescue practice in the slough
d. After dark assisted rescue practice in the slough (not if I’m alone)
Where:
Alton Slough
West Alton Shelter
Riverlands Way, West Alton, MO 63386
When:
Shove off @ ~ 5:45
Ashore @ ~7:45 (flexible)
Why:
Fun, break in a drysuit, work on some single paddle stokes
How:
I’ll be in my pack canoe
Paddled around the slough. and out near the main channel…the river smelled good tonight. Did two self-rescues before I got out…water was cold with just a t-shirt and shorts on under the dry suit. Didn’t want to push any boundaries being out by myself in the dark. Overall, it was a good paddle.
