ParticipantHi! New to the club and relatively new to kayaking. I’ve only been out on lakes so far, but I’m itching to go out on a river. Would you recommend this trip for me? Or should I wait for shorter trips, skills clinic, etc. I’m looking forward to getting involved. Thanks!

ModeratorMaura, With the current forecast for New Year’s Day I would not recommend this paddle for an inexperienced paddler. The temperature will barely be above freezing when we start and they are predicting wind gusts of up to 25 miles per hour. You would need the proper cold weather gear (wet suit or dry suit) to be comfortable. It isn’t going to be a pleasant trip probably but more of a bragging rites paddle. I hope to see you on some of our other paddles once it gets a little warmer. What kind of boat do you have so we can determine what paddles or right for you?

ParticipantThat makes sense. I certainly don’t want to bog down the group by signing up for things I’m not ready for.
I have a 10ft recreational kayak (Pelican).
Merry Christmas!

ModeratorMaura, I posted a paddle for Sunday when it will be warmer with less wind if you would be interested. Less chance of hypothermia if you get wet. I will post final details tomorrow.

ModeratorJohn, All I can say is we are still working the bugs out of the system. Carolyn forgot at first to link the waivers but hopefully Eleanor has corrected that. If you are an ACA member and did their annual waiver online the club should be covered for the trip under ACA guidelines.

ParticipantHappy 2025 all –
I’m a new member and signed up for Jan 1st paddle. Waterfowl hunting is my usual winter pastime.
Am loading a Hobie Compass, and the dry wear now. If the ramp is icy, or should any member observe something not right with my kit, please advise pre-launch and I’ll happily meet y’all later in the cantina 😉
Will sign waiver on-site, if someone can bring that form along?
Thank You,
David Ammons

ModeratorWith the rain we have had this week the Big River is dumping a lot of water into the Meramec just above where we are planning to paddle. As a result there is more current on this stretch than is normal. I do not want to cancel the paddle, but do think we should consider changing our plans some. We can still put in and take out at Route 66 state park and shorten how far we plan on paddling up stream with the increased current. Just be aware this stretch of the river will be bank full with nowhere to get off the water once we start. Another option would be to shuttle up to the Allenton Acccess and paddle to Route 66 State park. This would be about the same distance as the original plan but would require shuttling, but no paddling against the current. Think about this and we can finalize a plan when we meet at the Route 66 State Park Access.

ModeratorI’m looking forward to the paddle tomorrow. We have 12 signed up and one additional paddler who hasn’t registered yet. Only five have signed the waiver so far. Here is the link: https://waiver.smartwaiver.com/e/Wni2icqJViApWC9dLiS6ke/.
