ParticipantNext Tuesday looks to be an excellent day for a paddle. I’d like to try Route 66 State Park to Castlewood State Park if I can find at least one other person to join me. It’s close, with an easy shuttle and is quite scenic as well. Fall colors with lunch on a gravel bar sounds like a fine way to enjoy one of the last good days of the season. Reply here or 314-984-5084 or gstroh@sbcglobal.net.

ParticipantYou can’t use Castlewood as a put in or take out any longer. Vehicles aren’t allowed past the train tressel. The beach landing is closed because so many have drowned there

ParticipantThat’s news to me. How long has that been the case?

ParticipantI’m interested in this except for the dreaded portage at the end. Castlewood has been closed at least 5 years

ParticipantSherman access is a slightly easier take out. Short trip though. Allenton to 66 is about the same distance as your idea.

ParticipantI guess my original idea is out. Route 66 to Sherman beach seems too short. Pacific Palisades to Allenton or Allenton to Route 66 would be fine by me.

ParticipantIt looks like I’ve got 4 interested and 1 maybe. Lets meet at the Allenton Access at 9:30 to shuttle as many vehicles as possible to the ramp at Route 66 park. The forecast says it is going to be windy that day so be prepared for that.

ModeratorSorry Gary, Eleanor was going over some website features with me and we were trying to find an easy way for people to create a list without it getting buried in emails.

ParticipantI was just looking at this trip route yesterday ( a day later than your trip) sorry I missed out. I pinned some possible put in take out locations on the map and did not know about castlewood either. google maps did show a street view of a parking lot from Nov 2008…

ParticipantDoes anyone know if it is possible to float across under the 141 bridge near the Meramec Greenway Trailhead: Meramec Landing boat ramp? google maps satellite shows it like you might get stuck/scrape and have to walk across

ParticipantI’m not sure of your meaning but it is possible to go downstream and under the 141 bridge but there are two spots where the channel is very narrow. The one upstream of 141 could be tricky if there are obstructions. Those usually are right in the best line. Read the water well.
