Please post questions and comments here, including if you want to camp the night before the paddle.

Hi Carolyn. Does this trip involve car camping or camping on a gravel bar? Is it open to kids (I am thinking of my 11 year- old son, who has attended two open water clinics and did the club’s Big River trip last year)? Thanks, Dennis Pierce

        Hi Dennis,

Normally there are good camp sites on gravel bars or on the banks. I’ll be looking for any suggestions from recent paddlers to see what’s available since the flooding that occurred last year.

Ed Bayham is leading the trip, but the description says we are gravel bar camping. I would assume kids can come.

      Eileen and Carolyn –

Many thanks for the use of your kayak for my son on this trip and just year! and We can further discuss possible purchase in person. As you might recall, Eileen, if I am not mistaken, we had technical issues with my signing up for a club family membership and enrolling my son John, last summer. Carolyn – could you advise me of the current status of my ckub membership (family?) and whether I am good to proceed with signing up my son (and myself) for this Current River trip, or if not, assist me in getting things right administratively, so that my son can participate on this trip (which he is very excited about)? Thanks!

I am considering this trip. I see where this will be gravel bar camping. Would it be ill-advised to attempt to hammock camp? Can I expect to find two trees?
      Thanks,
      Kurt

        Kurt,

It’s possible you’ll be able to string a hammock but because of the flooding, there will be a lot of debris in the bushes and trees along the river bank. There really is no way to predict one way or another at this point.

You might want to review the posts on the Facebook pages: Current River, Jacks Fork & Eleven Point River (Missouri Scenic Rivers), Ozark Riverways Foundation, and Ozark National Scenic Riverways. Pictures on that site should give you a good idea of what the river banks look like.

Yeah, this would be my first attempt at this, so it could become an interesting learning experience. I’ve never slept well in tents. I’ll take a look at the pictures. Thanks.

Kurt, do you have a good inflatable air pad?

I do, though I’ll only be able to carry so much in my kayak. I’ll have to make trades at some point. 🙂

Yes, packing for an overnight trip in a kayak is an artform. I believe a good sleeping pad is essential and worth the space given the Ozark Mountain gravel and rock bars for tent sleepers. Think multiple small bags vs a couple big ones and put tent components in separate bags vs everything in the original bag. Definitely test pack before the trip!

Kurt, some hammock setups can be set up as a small Bivy in case you don’t find two appropriate trees. Even if not advertised as such it is possible to rig them. But would only be feasible with an air mattress because, who wants to lay on gravel! It’s nice to have an option. Let me know if I can be of assistance. I confess to falling into a the gear nerd category. What type/ size of boat will you be loading?

It’s a 14’ Carolina. You’ve got me thinking about ways I might keep the bug net off of me if on the ground, though of course I would much rather be in the hammock. At least I have a little more time yet to figure this out. 🙂

Please consider this as unofficial notice of my intent to participate in this trip, together with my 11-year-old son, John Pierce-Gomez. I am attempting to work through technical difficulties in signing us both up as officially required, with Carolyn’s help. Thanks, Dennis Pierce

      Eileen, Carolyn, and Ed,

I now believe I am officially signed up (with my son) – both with club tickets and the ACA waiver. I have gravel-camped on the Buffalo, so I’m confident we’ll be able to fit our gear in our boats. We’re looking forward to this adventure!

Anybody got suggestions on campsites? Akers shows only group, and Round Springs also. Two sites at echo b but those are walk in and place to park a trailer. Thoughts? Anything else close?
