Trip Information This is a trip for all levels but especially for those of you who have never done an overnight in your kayak. If you really want to come on one of our overnight trips on an Ozark Mountain River but you are really worried about arriving on that sandbar in the middle of nowhere and discovering that you've forgotten some essential items, this trip is for you. Or, if you are worried about realizing in the middle of the night (or whenever) that just don't want to do this, this trip is for you. Some of the considerations for your first overnight are: 1) Do I have the right gear? 2) Can everything I need fit in my kayak? 3) How is my kayak going to handle fully loaded? This is your chance to get those questions answered but in the worst case scenario, you can go home at the end of the first day if you don't want to spend the night. We will meet at Lenkman's Landing in St Charles on the Dardenne Slough of the Mississippi River. This is where we will be spending the night. We will consolidate cars and boats and drive up to Cuivre Island. We will enjoy a leisurely 10 mile paddle, then set up camp. Some of us will go get the cars left at Cuivre Island. We'll enjoy bonfires and the more experienced overnighters can answer any questions the first timers have. Sunday morning, we'll take as many cars as we can down to Hideaway Harbor and pack up. This will be a 17 mile trip, 2 miles of which will be upriver (probably). One thing we can't do too much is give you the experience of handling the twisty turns of the Ozark rivers but your loaded kayak will handle differently going upstream as opposed to downstream so you will get that experience. A word about your boats: on the Mississippi, we generally advise 14' or longer boats. On the Ozark Mountain boats, we advise 14' or shorter -- unless you are really good. So ideally, you first timers will use the boats you plan to be taking on the trips in the Ozarks. If you have a 16 foot sea kayak and our other boat is a 12-14 foot, well, is that a good test? If your boat is shorter than 14 feet, however, PLEASE CONTACT ME TO DISCUSS. People do do the Mississippi in 12 foot boats and we won't be in a hurry. This trip can also be done as one or two day trips without the overnight stay.
